Illustration Friday: Blanket

I remember running around the house, jumping off furniture. I clutched two corners of a blanket (okay, maybe it was a towel) around my neck and pretended a cape billowed dramaticaly behind me. The soundtrack, as I recall, was Gypsys, Tramps and Theives by Cher... or maybe it was The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia byVicki Lawrence. Well, is there a difference?!

That's what sprung to mind when I saw the word for Illustration Friday was "blanket."

Once again I challenged myself to create an illustration relatively quickly (5 hours from concept to final). I chose to work in line because my portfolio is lacking black and white samples - that's crazy because I grew up with a brush (and ink) in hand.

This illustration was actually created with goache, not ink. Goache is opaque but doesn't gum up a brush like ink. The color is added in Photoshop.

I. LOVE. IT.

I'm a little freaked out, though. It sounds as though the soundtrack to your childhood was exactly the same as mine. *shudder*

Wow that's fantastic. I love your style and cause it reminds me of when I used to jump of things with blankets. I have the scars to prove it.

Really SUPER man! You perfectly captured the fearlessness and exhileration of a youngster pretending to be his/her favorite superhero. I ran around the house for weeks with a Pepsi towel tied around my neck after seeing the first Superman movie. You're too modest. This illustration is much better than you made it out to be. You've improved quite a bit rendering childrens' faces. The very limited color palette works perfectly with this theme. The bold black areas really give the illustration power and evokes that comic book look. Nice!!! P.S. You need to start posting these great, new illustrations on your website.

Love this. Both my kids did made capes like this, and I probably did too!

I especially like the specificity of the toes and how they're working. I'm rehearsing a dance piece right now where I'm "in" water for part of the time and my feet are not yet so beautifully specific. I am inspired now, though.

wow, great one!
Beautiful lines and the whole situation is right on the spot, just perfect. AND the little boy really seams to have fun. (sorry for my English, hope you understand what I mean)

I love the retro illustration style. Looks like it could be an add out of a 1950s Mad Magazine...

"Get your very own GRAVITY DEFYING BLANKET"

...Placed on the same page as the x-ray specs and the personal submarine ads.

My blanket is pretty much a smelly rag now. It's in safe keeping, but I remember doing stuff like this. Great illustration. The kid's face is awesome, he looks so committed!!

This is very cool. I remember jumping off of my house when I was a kid (one-story ranch) with my Super Umbrella. Didn't really work though.
