I created this critter for a book project. A 3-D version comes in handy when I have to draw a character multiple times and from many different angles. I will also use it for shadow reference.
I used Sculpey for the first time (Sculpey is a type of polymer clay that can be molded and put into a conventional oven to harden). I found it remarkably easy (and fun!) to sculpt this little guy. I painted him grey (not the character's true color) to make it easier for me to see shadows. I used electrical tape for the pupils so I can change the direction of his gaze. Tip: I created (and baked) the teeth separately. Once hard, it was easy to push them into the soft Sculpey head.

Now, I'm not saying to dismiss John - he's smart and thoughtful and all - but I'm going to say this as a mother and as a consumer of children's books; the critter is ADORABLE!
I bet it's fun in your house. When I saw the first picture, I thought he was some sort of coat hook or something...
I thought it was one of those character toothbrush holders. Very cool, an expressive critter already.
Sculpy models can definitely be a handy reference tool. I'm not entirely sold on the character design of the alligator. The eyes seem a bit too large/bulbous (I'd make them smaller.) His teeth seem to be a bit too long and fang-like. The stripe pattern makes him look like a salamander. It might be technically accurate, but I'd tone the stripes down/modify them. I really like his pose and the composition of the dummy page!
