Here's my entry for this week's Illustration Friday topic "stitch"
What's Illustration Friday you ask? According to their website – Illustration Friday is a weekly illustration challenge. A topic is posted every Friday and then participants have all week to come up with their own interpretation.
I like to think of Illustration Friday as Project Runway for illustrators. On Project Runway, fashion designers compete to create garments (fashion forward garments) and are usually restricted in time, materials, and theme. (Ex: One challenge was create a dress from recycled materials collected at a NJ dump) The show is about creativity under pressure. As the season progresses, the designer's true strengths and weakness become evident.
I approached Illustration Friday as a time challenge. I gave myself one evening to conceive and illustrate an idea. I spent approximately six hours on the project (I stopped for dinner and the occasional big play during the Patriot's game).
I'm happy with the results. The self-imposed time limit prevented me from over-thinking and over-working the illustration.
And it was just like being a contestant on Project Runway – Except there was no Tim Gunn to give advice or Hedi Klum saying "Auf Wiedersehen!".
I think you've found your signature style. This illustration is fantastic! It's fun, clever, and rendered extremely well (the bandages are a thing of beauty.) You managed not to overwork this one and the results speak volumes. The only minor quibble is the purple "mist" in the background. It seems like a missed opportunity not to have a more developed background that places him in an environment befitting a mummy (pyramid, gloomy corridor, etc.) All in all though: great work!
Love the illo! Doesn't look like he needs his mummy to help him sow. Heehee. Great concept, love the limitations you placed on yourself to produce, very realistic sometimes the time limits artists have on them to show an idea. Awesome stuff.
How funny! Great work!
Great concept! That mummy is fantastic - color and emotion. Also enjoyed visiting your website. I look forward to seeing more.
This is great and I like your earlier sketches too. Will come back to see more of your work.
this is fabulous....made me smile immediatly....so clever and VERY well done !!
This illo is very well done! And personally, I like the purple mist. It allows me to focus all my attention on him. Nice use of the "stitch" concept.
Your mummy looks quite proud of his accomplishment, and is successful at being very cute too! Gorgeous work!
a : )
great illustration, really nice job!
The man needs some more thread!
oooh, wonderful!! You'd win on project runway.
According to my husband (New England born and raised but a Giants fan since he was seven) it will be Giants/Pats in the superbowl. Even though he has high hopes for the G-men he thinks the Pats will go all the way.
I love how he looks kind of ticked off that he's having to sew himself. There's an intensity to the gaze that's quite telling.
Wow! I like the color, the depth, expression, crisp lines, really terrific work!
great piece, and thanks for sharing your process a little. the expression on his face is perfect! I also like the mist, it fleshes it out more than a clean spot illo would.
Nice work. I like your approach to this "IF" thing. I take a similar approach.
This illustration in and of itself is brilliant. Your rendering and color are excellent.
This is GREAT! Fun and fluid and just lovely.
I love the idea of Illustration Friday. I'm inspired to do a "writing prompt" theme on my blog...
Project Runway for illustrators??? Great idea! Your work is really amazing. Very professional. No chance you'll get voted off.
Let's see some dummy book sketches or pratice sketches. The mummy rocks, but he's yesterday's news
(like I should talk right:)
